Evolutionary seduction

We love to tell stories, and I love to tell stories about science, but sometimes if the scientist falls under the sway of a good story, they can commit some sloppy research.

It is strikingly evident in evolutionary psychology– when the story of a trait providing an adaptive advantage can be a little too seductive at times.

It is easy to use our fabulously complex brains and imaginations– primed so by the jungle and need to pick out patterns, find the fruit amongst the leaves(HA!)– and say that something was made to be that way. Often, we are just wrong. Case in point: homophobia confers a fitness advantage??? I’m inclined to disagree, as does the author of this post:
